BIOGRAPHY

Devin Moore, a native of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, is currently a junior at the Juilliard School working towards his bachelor’s degree in Classical Viola Performance under the private instruction of violist Samuel Rhodes. He began his studies with Mr. Rhodes at the Manhattan School of Music in 2017.
 
Devin is an alumnus of the Pittsburgh Youth Symphony Orchestra, Three Rivers Young Peoples Orchestra, and Youth Chamber Connection, where he held many principal/leadership positions. He was a winner of the Montgomery Fellowship Award and Quartet Position for the 2014-2015 and 2016-2017 seasons. In 2017, Devin, alongside colleague and friend, James Cunningham, performed as a duet with the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra.
 
Devin’s academic achievements include: Pittsburgh Courier Generation NEXT Nomination and Article, a 2016 National Merit Scholarship Program Letter of Commendation for outstanding performance on the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test in 2015, the 2016 Yale Book Club Award, 2016 Chartiers Valley Senior Homecoming Court, and 2015 and 2016 Student Excellence Award.
 
In May of 2016, Devin was awarded the Gene Kelly Award for Best Actor in a High School Musical. From there, he competed in the National High School Musical Theatre Awards, where he participated in a 10-day intensive program/competition, working with Broadway actors, directors, producers, and choreographers, that culminated in a performance at the Minskoff Theatre. Devin was named a finalist and received a $2500 scholarship. Immediately afterward, he participated as a violinist in the National Youth Orchestra of the United States of America of 2016, performing with musicians such as Christoph Eschenbach, Emanuel Ax, Valery Gergiev, and Denis Matsuev in venues such as Purchase College, Carnegie Hall, the Concertgebouw, Opera Berlioz, Tivoli Hall, and Smetana Hall. In 2018, Devin was awarded a George and Kay Bucksbaum Orchestral Viola Fellowship at the Aspen Music Festival and School of 2018, alongside an acceptance into the esteemed Finckel-Wu Han Chamber Music Studio. At Aspen, Devin was a member of the Aspen Festival Orchestra, and performed as a chamber musician/soloist with Augustin Hadelich and Sarah Chang. In 2019, Devin attended the Sarasota Music Festival sitting principal violist and performing the Mendelssohn Octet with the Pacifica String Quartet. For Summer 2020, Devin was accepted to the Perlman Music Program Chamber Music Workshop and Kneisel Hall Chamber Music Program. In March of 2021, Devin will be participating as a finalist in the 2020 Cecil Aronowitz International Viola Competition in Birmingham, England. Devin has recently been invited to perform a solo viola work by composer Hannah Ishizaki as part of the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra's "Front Row: The PSO Virtual Experience." Devin is also Co-Founder and Director of Development for Opus Illuminate, an online concert series dedicated to performing and raising awareness for works by composers of underrepresented communities in order to expand the horizons of conventional programming.


At MSM, Devin held the position of Co-Principal Violist of many of the school’s orchestras and participated in chamber music and contemporary ensembles. He is a two-time winner of the Fuchs Chamber Music Competition. For the Centennial Opening Concerts, Devin’s sextet represented MSM’s Chamber Music Department at the Solo and Chamber Music Concert. In 2018, Devin was named winner of the Fall 2018 MSM “Harold in Italy” Viola Competition, getting the chance to perform Berlioz’s “Harold in Italy” Viola Solo with the MSM Symphony under the direction of Leonard Slatkin. Aside from the musical involvements at MSM, Devin held the position of Media and Communications Liaison on the MSM Student Council Executive Board, student representative on the Alumni Advisory Council, and was also a Resident Assistant and Conference Assistant of MSM’s Andersen Residence Hall.
 
At the Juilliard School, Devin has held the position of principal violist of the Juilliard Orchestra, Juilliard Orientation Orchestra, the Juilliard Chamber Orchestra, the Juilliard Lab Orchestra, and is a member of the 2019-2020 String Principal Pool for the Juilliard Orchestra. His quartet coaches under the tutelage of Joseph Lin, Astrid Schween, and Laurie Smuckler. Devin participated in the 2020 Juilliard ChamberFest where he coached with Fred Sherry and Joseph Kalichstein. Outside of his musical endeavors, Devin is also an Undergraduate Classical Music Representative on the Inaugural Juilliard Student Congress and a member of the Juilliard Black Student Union. Devin is a proud recipient of a Kovner Fellowship at The Juilliard School.
